Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD opened at #1 with a strong $58 (Million) debut above tracking when accounting for previews, and $274.9M globally. There is much more to be earned on this trilogy-ending installment of the successful franchise. With a budget of just $129M plus marketing, this will be very profitable for Universal and Dreamworks Animation, and the first release since Comcast purchased Dreamworks in 2016.
ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL is #2 with $12M, a domestic total of $60.6M, and a worldwide total of $263.3M following a $62M debut in China, and an entire international weekend of $94M as the film continues to play strong with audiences across the globe. The $170M budget film is still on pace for a worldwide total in the $500M range, meaning it will be profitable for Fox and likely launch a new franchise.
THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART is #3 with $10M, a domestic total of $83.6M, and $136.6M worldwide. Produced for $100M plus marketing, this film has come in lower both domestically and globally for WB, and is surprisingly set to be a financial loss for the studio, as audiences failed to embrace this sequel the same way they did the first film or THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE.
FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY is #4 with an $8.2M debut, a solid total as MGM believes this film will have legs in the coming weeks, thanks to an A CinemaScore from audiences and the WWE fanbase.
ISN'T IT ROMANTIC slid to #5 with $7.5M, and a total of $33.7M. Produced for around $30M plus marketing, this one looks set to be a moderate financial loss for WB unless international plays at the same level as HOW TO BE SINGLE.
WHAT MEN WANT is #6 with $5.2M, and a total of $45M. Produced for $20M plus marketing, this Paramount release will be profitable, and a solid sleeper hit this late-winter season.
HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U is #7 with $4.9M, a domestic total of $21.6M, and $42.5M worldwide. Produced for $9M plus marketing, this will be profitable, but not nearly at the level that Universal and Blumhouse were hoping for.
COLD PURSUIT is #8 with $3.3M, a domestic total of $27M, and an early $35M worldwide with most of international yet to open. Domestically this one is playing stronger than expected, but profitability on this film, produced in the $30M range, will depend entirely on the global take, where Neeson is a popular draw.
THE UPSIDE held at #9 with $3.2M, a domestic total of $99.7M, and an early $110M worldwide. Produced for $37.5M plus marketing, this has become a very nice hit for everyone involved, and only the second film released by STX to hit the $100M threshold in the U.S., which it will achieve this upcoming week.
RUN THE RACE debuted at #10 with $2.2M playing in just 853 theaters.
Next weekend sees debuts for comedy A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL, and thriller GRETA, ahead of CAPTAIN MARVEL which is tracking for a big opening on March 8th in an otherwise shockingly quiet month.
