Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL opened at #1 on the low end of expectations with a disappointing $36M (Million) domestic and $153M worldwide. Produced for around $185M plus marketing, this will be a financial loss for Disney, joining ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS, A WRINKLE IN TIME, and DUMBO as expensive misfires from the otherwise record-smashing studio.
JOKER is #2 with $29.2M, bringing the domestic total to an impressive $247.2M, and the global haul to $737M. There is every expectation that in the U.S. this film will earn more than $300M, and the only question is whether globally it will cross the $1 Billion mark or fall just shy of that result; in what is a tremendous achievement for WB and another highly successful DC film.
ZOMBIELAND 2: DOUBLE TAP opened at #3 with a solid $26.7M domestically, and a very early $32M worldwide. Produced for $42M plus marketing, this release should be profitable for Sony, presuming international comes in higher this time than the original.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY is #4 with $16M, and a total so far of $56.8M, with international yet to open. This animated take on the classic brand has already been deemed successful enough by United Artists Releasing that a sequel is in the early stages of development.
GEMINI MAN fell to #5 with $8.5M, a domestic total of just $36.5M, and a worldwide total of only $118.7M following a poor reception in China. Produced for $138M plus marketing, this will be a sharp financial loss for Skydance and Paramount, and will join AFTER EARTH as the worst showing for star Will Smith in a big-budget release, in the same year that ALADDIN gave Smith the biggest hit of his career.
ABOMINABLE is #6 with $3.5M, a domestic total of only $53.9M, and a worldwide total of $128M, in what will be a significant financial loss for Dreamworks Animation and for Universal, coming in as the one of the lowest-grossing films in the history of the animation studio.
DOWNTON ABBEY is #7 with $3M, a domestic total of $88.6M, and an impressive $164M worldwide. Plans are already underway for a sequel, to what now stands as the top release ever for Focus Features.
JUDY is #8 with $2M, and a total now of $19M. By next weekend it will pass up THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON to become Roadside Attraction's fourth biggest release, and should surpass MUD ($21M final) to end up as the third most successful film in the distributor's history.
HUSTLERS is #9 with $2M, a domestic total of $101.8M, and a worldwide total of $125.4M. For STX this is the third film from the studio to ever pass the $100M mark following THE UPSIDE ($108M final) and BAD MOMS ($113M final). Produced for only $20M plus marketing, this is a big financial win for the studio.
IT: CHAPTER 2 rose back up to #10 with $1.5M, a domestic total of $209.6M, and a worldwide haul of $449M. Produced for around $70-80M plus marketing, this has been a highly profitable horror hit for WB.
Next weekend sees debuts for police thriller BLACK & BLUE, as well as horror film COUNTDOWN, ahead of November kicking off what will be a busy and incredibly lucrative winter holiday season at the box office.
