Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
THE UPSIDE opened at #1 with a strong $19.5M (Million), well above expectations, in a big win for STX and co-star Kevin Hart, who continues his hot streak at the box office with this success. Produced for $37.5M, this film will be nicely profitable for all involved.
AQUAMAN slid to #2 with $17.2M, a domestic total of $287.8M, and a global haul of $1.020 Billion to become the second-biggest DC film ever behind THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, and the biggest film yet from the DC Cinematic Universe line which began with MAN OF STEEL. Produced for $200M plus marketing, this has been a massive hit for WB, with more to be earned, and a sequel in development.
A DOG'S WAY HOME opened at #3 with $11.3M, an okay result given the budget of $18M plus marketing. Depending on holds and international, the film should be able to become profitable for Sony.
SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE held at #4 with $9M, a domestic total of $147.7M, and $302M worldwide. Produced for $90M plus marketing, this film has become very solidly profitable for Sony, and the launch of a new animated franchise for the studio.
ESCAPE ROOM slid to #5 with $8.9M, and a total now of $32.4M, in another success for Sony, which produced this hit for just $9M plus marketing. The domestic total alone will make this profitable, with international ramping up the success, in what is likely the launch of a new original micro-budget franchise.
MARY POPPINS RETURNS fell to #6 with $7.2M, a domestic total of $150.6M, and $287.8M worldwide. Produced for $130M plus marketing, this one may not reach profitability for Disney, but should finish around break-even territory for the studio, as it did not quite live up to expectations.
BUMBLEBEE is #7 with $6.7M, a domestic total of $108.4M, and $364.7M globally. Produced for $135M plus marketing, the film should essentially be considered profitable for Paramount by the end of nice weekend, thanks to strong holds and a good international run.
ON THE BASIS OF SEX is #8 with $6.2M and a total of $10.5M, after expanding into 1,923 theaters over this weekend, a good result for this biopic on the legendary Supreme Court Justice, right in line with expectations for Focus Features.
THE MULE is #9 with $5.5M, and a total of $90.5M. Produced for $50M plus marketing costs, this WB release has been another quiet hit for Clint Eastwood, as it marches to the $100M threshold domestically, and should reach a decent total with international audiences to become nicely profitable.
VICE is #10 with $3.2M, and a total of just $35.9M despite awards wins and nominations. Produced for $60M plus marketing, this will be a sharp financial loss for Annapurna.
Next weekend sees the launch of GLASS over the extended holiday, looking for a big 4-day debut as tracking and interest has been through the roof on this long-awaited conclusion to M. Night's UNBREAKABLE trilogy.
