4-Day Weekend Box Office Top 10:
GLASS opened at #1 with $47M (Million) domestic, and a global debut of $95.5M. While below tracking, which suggested a $60-70M domestic total and somewhere in the $120-130M global range, this is still a big win for Blumhouse and Universal given the film's budget of $20M plus marketing, playing more like a sequel to SPLIT than to the original UNBREAKABLE.
THE UPSIDE is #2 with $18.3M, a domestic total of $46.6M, and an early $50M worldwide with the vast majority of international yet to debut. Produced for $37.5M plus marketing, this is well on its way towards profitability for STX and all involved.
AQUAMAN held at #3 with $12.5M, a domestic total of $306.5M, and a global haul of $1.065 Billion, soon to eclipse THE DARK KNIGHT RISES to become the top DC based comic book film ever worldwide.
DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY opened at #4 with $11.4M over the weekend, and a six-day opening of $21.9M domestic. Worldwide is a stunning $87.7M as the fanbase has flocked to this theatrical release of the popular anime series.
SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE is #5 with $9.7M, a domestic total now of $160.7M, and an impressive $325M globally. Produced for $90M plus marketing, this film has become nicely profitable for the studio in addition to a critically acclaimed success, and is soon to become Sony Animation's top film ever domestically, eclipsing HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 shortly.
A DOG'S WAY HOME is #6 with $9.3M, a domestic total of $23.8M, and an early $28.9M worldwide. Produced for $18M plus marketing, this film will be profitable for Sony thanks to good holds and a decent international run.
ESCAPE ROOM is #7 and continues Sony's success with $6.7M, a domestic total now of $42.1M, and an early $55.1M worldwide. Produced for just $9M plus marketing, this has become nicely profitable and very likely the launch of a new original franchise.
MARY POPPINS RETURNS slid to #8 with $6.7M, a domestic total of $160.2M, and $307M globally. Produced for $130M plus marketing, the film still has a ways to go before profitability for Disney, but will in the least have reached break-even for the studio before its theatrical run is over.
BUMBLEBEE is #9 with $5.8M, a domestic total of $117.1M, and a worldwide haul of $413.5M. Produced for $135M plus marketing, this has been a nice success for Paramount and successful reboot of the franchise, pleasing both critics and audiences as the best-reviewed film from the TRANSFORMERS brand. A sequel/spin-off is already in development, said to be focusing on both Bumblebee and Optimus Prime.
ON THE BASIS OF SEX is #10 with $4.6M, and a total of $17.5M, a decent result for this specialty release from Focus Features.
Next weekend will be a slow end to January, ruled by holdovers as the only new wide-releases are THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING, and SERENITY.
