Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
ANGEL HAS FALLEN opened at #1 with a strong $21.2M (Million) debut, higher than all tracking and almost exactly matching the opening of LONDON HAS FALLEN, the previous film in the franchise. With a budget of only $40M plus marketing, this will be nicely profitable for Lionsgate, with a fourth film expected in the successful original Gerard Butler action franchise.
GOOD BOYS held on at #2 with $11.7M, a domestic total of $42M, and an early $49M worldwide. Produced for just $20M plus marketing, this will no doubt be profitable for Universal, and a win for original comedy.
OVERCOMER opened at #3 with a solid $8.2M from only 1,723 theaters, and with an "A+" CinemaScore which promises a lengthy run for this faith-based film released by Sony. Expect to see strong holds in the weeks ahead.
THE LION KING is #4 with $8.1M, a domestic total of $510.6M, and a global haul which has now reached a stunning $1.508 Billion. By Monday, the film is expected to cross $1 Billion from international, which will make it only the 9th film to ever hit that number, and the 4th from Disney.
FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW is #5 with $8.1M, a domestic total of $147.7M, and a worldwide total of $588.9M after opening in China to a $100M+ debut, the largest ever for the month of August in the region. Before next weekend the film will cross the $600M mark globally, and at a $200M budget, will finish its run as a solidly profitable hit for Universal.
READY OR NOT opened at #6 with $7.5M and a total debut since Wednesday of $10.5M, a disappointing result which only continues Fox's problems at the box office, this film being from the Fox Searchlight label.
THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 is #7 with $6.3M, a domestic total of only $27M, and $74.6M worldwide. Produced for $65M plus marketing, it is unlikely this Sony Animation film will be profitable, but it could still reach break-even range depending on international numbers.
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK is #8 with $6M, a domestic total of $50.4M, and a worldwide total of $72M. Produced for only $25M plus marketing, this will be profitable for Lionsgate, and likely launch a new horror franchise for the studio.
DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD is #9 with $5.2M, a domestic total of $43M, and only $60M worldwide. Produced for $49M plus marketing, this now looks set to be a financial loss for Paramount.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD is #10 with $5M, a domestic total of $123M, and almost $240M worldwide. Produced for $90M plus marketing, this Sony release is set to be a profitable hit thanks to strong numbers both in the U.S. and internationally, with more play to come overseas, where several key territories have yet to open.
Next weekend is a quiet one, with only DON'T LET GO making a debut as studios chose to sit out ahead of IT: CHAPTER 2 which is on track for a $100M+ domestic opening for WB beginning with previews on September 5th.
