THE NEW MUTANTS opened at #1 with $7M (Million) domestically, playing in roughly 60-70% of North America, representing the United States and Canada. Very early and limited international contributed $2.9M for a total debut of $9.9M for this Disney release of the long-delayed 20th Century Studios title, the final installment of the Fox-era X-MEN franchise before the anticipated reboot of the brand under Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once again since the pandemic began, drive-in theaters accounted for a significant portion of grosses. Totals were on the lower-end of tracking.
UNHINGED fell to #2 with $2.6M, a domestic total of $8.8M since opening last weekend, and a global total of $16.8M for this release under Solstice Studios. Previously, it has been suggested by the studio that they were hoping for a $30M domestic total in long-term play, but that number now appears to be out-of-sight in even the best scenarios.
BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC opened at #3 with $1.06M playing across 1,007 screens and a simultaneous PVOD (Premium Video On Demand) launch. While PVOD numbers from Orion have not been made available yet, the film has remained at the top of all digital rental and sales charts this weekend, and a digital bundle of the entire trilogy was number two on iTunes as well. Drive-in theaters accounted for the bulk of the theatrical revenue.
THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN is #4 with $604K (Thousand) from Canada, and a total of $2M. For U.S. audiences, this Paramount release is heading to CBS All Access as an exclusive debut.
THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD is #5 with $520K in its domestic debut, and a worldwide total of $10.4 Million for Fox Searchlight.
WORDS ON BATHROOM WALLS is #6 with $435K and a total of $1.083M for Roadside Attractions.
The big news internationally is the long-awaited debut of TENET, which brought in $53M since Wednesday, across 41 markets, representing every significant territory except for the United States, China, and Russia, where the film will be releasing this upcoming weekend. Breaking down the grosses, the U.K. was the top market with $7.1M, followed by France at $6.7M, Korea at $5.1M, and Germany at $4.2M.
Overall, TENET needs to bring in $600M worldwide for profitability, while roughly $450M would put it in the break-even range. At this point it's not clear if either number is feasible for this Warner Bros. film, though the outlook will become much clearer after next weekend, which will also see Disney release MULAN exclusively across Disney+ domestically, though it is not known whether the studio will release financial numbers on the film immediately.
