ANNABEL MACLEAN is an Australian screenwriter, filmmaker, and actor whose work explores female identity, survival, intergenerational relationships, and ethical boundaries through horror, sci-fi, and comedy. She grew up in Phalaborwa, South Africa, before relocating to Perth, Western Australia, as a teen along with her three younger sisters. Annabel has lived in Geraldton, Sulawesi Indonesia, Melbourne, Vancouver Canada, and is currently based in Los Angeles.
Her horror short script MR BIG HANDS is a Finalist in the MidWest Weird Fest 2024 Short Screenplay Competition, a Quarterfinalist in the 2024 ScreenCraft Short Screenplay Competition, and the Filmmatic Horror Screenplay Awards Season 8, 2024. It is also a Second Rounder in the ScreenCraft Film Fund Spring 2024 Competition and currently ranks in the top 11% of 4,035 Short Horror projects on Coverfly and top 16% of all 133,455 projects on the platform.
Annabel's West Australian set tooth fairy horror feature TANAMI has been in development with Rob Tapert at Ghost House Pictures (Evil Dead films, The Grudge, Don’t Breathe) for the past year. It was a Second Rounder at Austin Film Festival 2022's annual Screenplay Competition and in the 2022 ScreenCraft Feature Film Fund Competition, amongst other accolades. Annabel was a recipient of the Australasian Horror Writers' Association Mentorship in 2021 and was mentored by Shayne Armstrong (Bait, The Darkness) for TANAMI. TANAMI currently sits in the top 14% of 6,860 Feature Horror projects and the top 12% of all 133,455 projects on Coverfly.
Annabel was selected for the WIFT Australia x Cinefest Oz Writers Retreat 2021 with her comedy series PAIN IN MY ASS. In 2020, she sold her award-winning dramedy short film DEATH OF THE PARTY to Canadian broadcaster Super Channel.
As an actor, Annabel has many notable performances including Bobbi, the South African soccer player in EA Games' FIFA 2020 Volta Football and Ellen, the quirky assistant in season three of Lifetime/Hulu’s dramedy UNREAL. Her latest performance as the lead in BAD VIBRATIONS, an eight-minute one-shot horror film, recently had its world premiere at Flickerfest International Short Film Festival 2024 and is currently on the international film festival circuit.
