Finalist, The Coletta Preacely-Garcia Diversity Fellowship 2024
BIO
KAY KAANAPU is a writer, improviser and comedian who scientists refer to as ‘Super Mixed.’ So, the contradictions in her life run deep. She’s Hawaiian but detests pineapple. She’s Mexican but can only ingest the mildest of salsas. She loves the taste of tequila but suffers from severe Asian glow. But Kay’s mixed-ness goes beyond her contradicting ethnicities. While she’s an introvert who prefers to remain quiet among friends and family, she writes and performs comedy with UCB’s Asian AF/Filipino AF and her all-female Asian improv troupe, Number One Son. She also wrote for the 2016 CBS Diversity Showcase and wrote/directed sketches with the all-female comedy troupe, Glamazon. Kay’s work has been showcased at the Del Close Marathon, San Francisco Sketchfest, and the Hawaii Comedy Festival, and she has placed as a finalist in fellowships for NBC, the National Hispanic Media Coalition and Nickelodeon.
