For me, it all comes down to the characters and their journeys: who they are at fade in, who they are at fade out, and how they get there. There are different ways to get this across, each of which must of course be in balance with plot, structure, worldbuilding, tone, etc., so that one can visualize the project without losing track of the emotions carrying me through the story.
As a producer, I am most interested in emotionally grounded, character-driven genre stories for series and feature: sci-fi, climate fiction, supernatural, etc. These can be dramatic or comedic, heavy or light on their feet: STATION ELEVEN and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS are good comps, as are SILO, ARCANE, SCAVENGERS REIGN, Mike Flanagan's series, Jordan Peele's films — even something as experimental as NEPTUNE FROST. The one thing I am not looking for is bleak — no THE LAST OF US. I am really interested in helping writers find their voice and projects find their fullest expression.
Not looking for network-style, multi-cam comedy, nor YA.
Sean founded Standard Definition in 2022, where he specializes in literary adaptations for series and feature, with projects in development internally and with studio partners. Prior, he was an executive at Gaumont, where he produced the first season of Amazon's EL PRESIDENTE, worked on several seasons of Netflix's F IS FOR FAMILY, and developed series projects that he sold to HBO, Amazon, Hulu, and Starz. His first job in the industry was for director Alexander Payne, and before that had spent many years in academia as a neuroscientist and cell biologist.
