As writers, we're often told to write what we know and many of us stick to those rules. But there are times when we want to write characters who are outside of our lived experience: a different gender identity, sexuality, ethnicity, etc. We can do a lot of research and speak to people who have lived those experiences, but to really do our due diligence, it's important to take the the final step and get a Sensitivity Read.
But what is a Sensitivity Read? Briefly, it's an analysis of your story with a particular focus on being sensitive to any unconscious or conscious bias, lack of understanding, stereotyping/misrepresentation of marginalized communities, anything patently offensive (that has no bearing on your story), and more. They can work in film, tv, and publishing.
In this 60 minute webinar, dena harry saleh (they/them/theirs) will cover:
- What is a Sensitivity Read?
- How do you know you need one?
- How do you find someone to do one?
- How to assess if the story you're telling is one you should be telling,
- Live Q&A
